TLOF p.4-5

Finally, the next page of manga:

TLOF Chapter 2.3, p. 4-5 by =Waterdroplet-s on deviantART

I couldn't really figure out what was wrong with the next page of manga for over 4 months. I thought that coloring the page would work but it didn't, so I redrew the whole page two days ago.

So now, I end 2008 with a new manga page- and hopefully, I can create something much better next year.

Yep... just fiddled around with the fractal I made last night. :p

Today was a holiday so I made an early Christmas cake- from sugar and flours so... my right arm is dead tired from all the stirring and whipping!!

But, it turned out yummy :p

With slight focus on design

Well, I only started getting aware of it a couple of days ago, so forgive me if I'm not following rules of design.

Typography practice 1 by =Waterdroplet-s on deviantART

Wallpaper: Citylight by =Waterdroplet-s on deviantART

1st one: took of couple of days to produce
2nd one: Took 15 min to produce

and guess what-

The one that I created in 15 min is more popular.... X0X

I better focus more on graphic design from now.

There's one illust I'm planning to create- I think I will start working on it tomorrow after baking Christmas cake since tonight's party time~

...

I think I will redraw my next manga page since making it color didn't help the situation. I didn' want to - for a couple of months since I really liked it. But, looking at it now, it didn't seem that good. So,I will try to work on it slightly more from now.

Well, it's not wonderful- but this is the best I could manage for now in Cinema 4D. Since I want to learn computer graphics design, I wanted this to be the graphic to compare before and after studying it.

Anyway, I got this idea off a traffic jam sign up in Japanese highways.

Gaaah!

These are two books I got to study design (book+ computer graphics) last night.

Two years ago, I studied manga from scratch.

Last year, I began studying CG.

and this and next year, studying/will study 3DCG and design.

Since I couldn't study art in univ., I study/practice on my own after work every night since two years ago. Even then, it takes a bit longer than others to find out what really needs improvement and etc about my art skills.

So... now, I finally found what I was really looking for: computer graphics design

Hopefully, at the end of all this, I could create a piece that will be considered art instead of a doodle that I do often.

Placement of words and drawings in a right place makes the whole piece seem a lot more interesting.

Happy from drinking boba.

Doodle

iN yOuR dReAmS by =Waterdroplet-s on deviantART

I tried to make it more mature looking than usual. My previous illust was meant to be like this- but somehow- it went in a totally opposite direction.

I used less colors and filled with darker colors to fit the atmosphere and expression of the character. I originally intended this to be more urban looking but since the outfit didn't match- I just added vines and stuff- then, ta-dah! :p

The word in the back is "dream" since I like that word somehow. The title- random as usual.

Gaaah!

Couldn't paint properly last night. I did two types and erased completely two times since I couldn't find the right color of the image I have in my mind.

I guess my ability to do oil painting (well, CG this time though) has slacked off over the years. Gaaaaah!

Anyway, I finally got it so I will try to restart it again tonight or tomorrow.

Done and submitted

I sent off three designs for mobile phone design contest over the weekend. However, since I'm a few weeks ahead of deadline- I might change the content before that. The result will be in at the end of next month.

It's been a year and three months since I started CG- and this was my fifth and last art contest I've tried within this year. And oi... I didn't start trying out until this year.

1 for site (mascot, US, Feb 2008)
1 for a nintendo DS game (fan art, US, April 2008)
2 pro-manga magazines (Japan, USA, Sept. & Nov 2008)
1 for a major mobile phone company(Japan, Dec 2008)

Hopefully, the result is good. If not, I will try harder next year!!!

Well, it seems as though I am not so lucky with contests this year- there were some good stuff:

1. Met with a pro-manga magazine editor for advice (April 2008)
2. My illustrations/manga got on recommended reading list in one site (July-Sept 2008 for a few days)
3. Got invited among 500 artists to display my manga at a mobile phone site (beta version)
4. Did commissions (small movie poster, commercial T-shirt designs, and individual work)
5. Got a mascot I drew (character design/coloring were done by two other people)up on one major site (up since Oct- though I wish I did better)
6. Got to know wonderful people and did collabs for two illustrations
7. Started 3DCG (my dream since high school)
8. Set up international groups and club.
9. TLOF Chapter 2 released in Feb + random pages of manga (I should have done more perhaps)
10. My personal life (job, relationship, language, academics) improved dramatically.

And hell- I did none/little of this a year or two years ago when I didn't do CG/manga. Just shows how much I didn't try.

but most of all, I think I got more confidence about myself and not as nervous as before in front of others.

However, I'm not satisfied with my art skills since it's still at amateur level and needs improvement.

Well, now, my goal is to get better in my art skills, techniques, designs, and story telling skills in manga/illustrations/3DCG. I think trying for something high constantly and working towards it will eventually pay off in the end.

One of the CG artist I really admire, told me other day, that trying in variety of fields will improve things in general. It's true.

Anyway, I was working on painting my next manga page from last night for real. I think I should start working on it before I get distracted with something else-lol

Oh, it's TLOF- manga I just do for fun.

3DCG practice

These days, I'm following on-line tutorials about Photoshop skills and techniques such as Web Design Library (日本語版)and PSDTUTS

I usd two tutorials (half tone and virtual orange) from such sites for this:

I think they have great techniques there and I used orange tutorial and half tone tutorial (but in my case, I did in alpha channel).

Anyway, practicing w/ Cinema 4D using two tutorials:

By using two hypernurbs, I was able to smoothen out the tentacles. I used 3 lights (yellow, light cyan, and white for this)

So, I learned three stuff:

- how to smoothen out models
- how to create models with glossy appearance
- changing camera angles

gaaaah!

I think my next page for TLOF Ch. 2.3 I was working on the side for the past few months- procrastinating mostly- won't be in B&W.

It's cause I think I reached a limit for what I can express in B&W for that particular scene. In addition, I don't think I drew TLOF page in color- so it shall be that.

Anyway, a clip of a botched B&W version:

:D

I finally got the time to participate in usual monthly/bimonthly art contest in Japan!!

Before, I had several manga submission deadlines coming up - so I couldn't participate in any illustration contest for several months- but now since I don't have any deadline coming up soon- I will try out an art contest~

I don't think I will win this one though since I'm going to compete against pro arists.

Anyway- if I win (which WON'T happen- probably)- my submitted work will be displayed in one big mobile phone company's stores across Japan. If I win- I will post a link to that art work once the result comes out in Feb. If not, I will just post it in DA.

I think they will be in vector art format- no anime/manga drawing for my case- and have already two designs I want to try out within a few minutes of learning about the contest~

p.s.

Gaaaaah! My illust totally lacks proper design!!!

So- for the next few weeks or from now on, I will try to incorporate more- techniques to my drawing like yesterday's wall paper.

Anyway, what I practiced today with one book:

"Can you hear it?" in Japanese. Just random phrase.

3DCG+manga/anime character

3DCG: Scatter 2 by =Waterdroplet-s on deviantART

LOL!!!! For the first time- I managed to combine both 3DCG and manga/anime drawing----yaaaaaah!

Yeah because of it- there are probably mistakes... Oh well. It's 1:50 am right now. Everything looks nice at this hour~

Okay... I'm still not good at coloring hair and there's a bit too much blue here- but this is where I passed out after working for two nights and a few hours in order to combine both my own 3DCG and manga/anime character into illustration for the first time- so yeah... there are mistakes here and there probably. I'll do better next time.

This time, I tried to incorporate my original -veryX2 simple/basic 3DCG into the usual illustration instead of fractals. I created the background first and the character later- just like scatter([link]). Since it was still complicated for me, I drew the rough draft first on paper+pencil, scanned and produced the character and 3D CG based on it. In the end, I used the same original brush as [link] . Everything but the character and yellow triangles was produced in Cinema 4D- which I'm still trying to get the hang of it.

The line rendering for Cinema 4D was produced based on the tutorial by Pdgfx. Thank you.

Er... yeah....

I was trying out the demo version of Cinema 4D and Maya last night since I want to get good 3DCG software used by pros. I am the real beginner in 3DCG, but I was adviced to use softwares that pro use so I could get used to the tools of the trade. I asked several pro-level artists and these were what I landed with.

Maya (good for still images and movies)... I had no idea how to use it.

Cinema 4D(C4D) is easier to use... though it's not good for movies. Since I do still image, I think this software is better for me. However I still don't know how I got this:

This figure first had hair only on its butt so I tried to add more and...

There's no problem about this thing worrying about losing too much hair, huh?

Finally finished my name of manga...

I finally finished the analog version of manga's name (first draft) today for pro-level contest submission. I worked on it from the end of June and had the first version in July. However, I did not work on it fully until this week when I drew ~36 pages on paper/pencil. I did ~13 pages yesterday and 7 today before going off to post office to send it off to the publisher. It will be my first submission to a pro-level magazine.

It is the first and last work I will do for Surume- the international manga production group formed in June. Due to conflicts in schedule, it will be disbanded. However, the result of this contest submission will be up in Dec. in pro-level magazine- if it turns out well.

I will work on a collab illust. tonight and go off to sleep.

Sunday, September 14, 2008

Last night and today's 3DCG

18 more pages to go.

That's the number of pages I have to draw by tomorrow for my manga for the contest. However, I got sick of doing last night for these past few days- so I tried to create something out of SF movie and created something equivalent to cheap bolts.

My first attempt:

Although I liked the color in front, I didn't like those at the back so I changed it to:

Well... it didn't turn out the way I wanted it to so I should have left it as it was.

Now, since I'm happy with this, I will go back to working on the first draft of manga.

Turned out kinda funny... since I fiddled around with its material more than I should...
but now... I know how to manipulate some models. I used this tutorial for Blender. It seems pretty useful.

Today's 3D

Wheel: 4th try with 3D by =Waterdroplet-s on deviantART

It took a few hours and 4 hours to render. I think computer does most of the work in 3D since I have no idea what I'm doing or how I did it most of the time.

What it looked like before rendering:

Thursday, September 4, 2008

Today's 3D

Not much improvement since the last one- except I now know how to do reflection setting :D
I tried to make the right object look like a glass, and it kind of turned into a plastic material. I'm not really sure how to control camera setting yet- I sometimes manage it and sometimes don't. So, next thing I should learn is how to produce glass and change camera angles properly. Even simple images look totally different with a simple twist of camera. :D
Software used:
Blender
YafRay (rendering)
Time it took:
25-30 min

Eureka!

Being drunk and doing 3D CG simultaneously don't work

Yes... that's what I concluded after drinking out last night. Well, I thought I was strong, but gaaaah! Got knocked out with just one cocktail.

Despite that, I managed to go home, walk the dog (I was walking diagonally), and tried to battle with Blender.

I read several on-line tutorials about great features that the combination of Blender and another free rendering program called Yafray does to images. So, I attempted to produce metal, glass, and since I would need to produce model to do them....

In the end, all failed. However, I managed to learn how to produce my own model with wires.

So... I think I will start off with trying to make simple models. Then, shift to furniture or buildings. Then, figures. I better get back to manga and illustrations tonight since I'm going way off the side track. It's a trial period for me to see if I'm really ok with 3D. I think I will go off trying to Shade or other 3D softwares if I like 3D modeling. This skill will probably help in my job as well, if I manage to produce nice images :D

However, I heard once from the pro-manga editor that there's one mangaka that produces building models to refer to it whenever she's drawing manga scenes. So... I guess I'm attempting the same method- trying to learn models, but in this case, CG.

Even if this doesn't work, I can still use it as a reference for my manga, so I'm happy with this software.

Oi...

Today is the day when I curse my fate of being born Japanese in Japan.

Reason?

It's because I slept wrong and my neck is hurting me. In Japan, you have to bow in order to greet people- just a simple nod is fine- but gaaaaaah!

YOU DON'T WANT TO FACE THAT WHEN YOUR NECK IS HURTING LIKE HELL!!

Anyway, I was working on coloring last night of that side face so expect it to be up in a few days. I edited the Japanese version of p.1 of Ch 2.3 of TLOF so it has some lonely atmosphere with more space between phrases.

Dying...

I am currently drawing up the first page for my short manga. It will be TLOF related chapter.

The only problem is that I was very stupid to decide that I really need to practice backgrounds which need meticulous amount of drawing. As a result, I am cursing myself about it. I love to be lazy.

It will probably take a several days to a week to draw up each page. The first page will be up... if lucky... tonight, tomorrow, or a few days later ( :p ).

I have other stuff to do tonight, so I can only restart it again around 9 or 10pm. It all depends on how much I can finish up tonight.

Hmmm....

Although claiming before that I will be working on 8 page manga, there was a "bit of glitch" (i.e. I forgot how to count). As a result, I will be working on 9-10 pages manga- not a preferable number of pages.

Anyway, it will be just a practice for background, so yes... it's just a practice.

Instead of collab illustration last night, I was trying to practice coloring- side view of a face. I usually put up a line art once I finish with my illustration, I will put up one right now (lines are bit weird still).

I will be working on this and will put the finished version up in a couple of days- probably.

Ok... since I said that I will try to do at least a bit of blogging, I will try to write my everyday meaningless... diary to see how long I can keep up with this (since I gave up one last year for English blog).

I'll warn people though- that you shall see a side of me that's--- very random. I think people who can read Japanese got that part of me already. I can sound very serious one moment, and in the next entry, I might sound happy as hell. That's my style- very random. I think my Japanese one is worse since I sound like a middle aged guy one moment, in the next one, I sound like a female teenager. I change my writing style depending on the mood I'm in- though it's probably not as obvious in English.

Anyway, here I go with my real blogging entry!

with a smelly sock (just kidding)

p.s.

I just subscribed myself to additional English journal.

I will compare both Blogger and this live journal for a while to see which one I like the best. Once I make up my mind, I might keep just one or both blogs. They will have same content but hosted by different blog server.

Second entry with images

I will post more images soon, but here's one artwork I've posted in on-line last night. I drew this with Corel Painter I got just a week ago. This was actually my third try.

First entry here

Hi, I'm new here, and I created this account today so I can perhaps... start blogs friendly to English speaking community. I usually write regularily in a Japanese blog,

I'm an amateur manga artist in Japan, who started drawing manga from 2.5 years ago. I started going to CG about a year ago. All of my techniques are almost all self learned, so forgive me if I have occassional glitches. I'm currently trying to produce manga so I can go pro soon and host manga in various websites, English and Japanese. I have one manga up on a Japanese mobile site as well.

I will try to keep this blog so anybody who is not registered at deviantART can comment on my artwork. However, I recommend you to visit my deviantART account since you can download images and zoom into them.
